Fifty People 'Likely' Killed in the Most Severe Tornado Event in Kentucky

INTERNATIONAL: About 50 people are "likely" to have been killed in a devastating outbreak of tornadoes that ripped through Kentucky and several other U.S. states late Friday and early Saturday , Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has declared.It was the most severe tornado event in Kentucky.

Multiple tornadoes have touched down and have damaged over a dozen Kentucky counties. The primary tornado was on the ground continuously for over 200 miles , something residents have never seen before. The deaths in multiple, possibly in many counties; the hardest-hit county appears to be Graves, where the city of Mayfield has been devastated. A roof collapse at a candle factory has resulted in mass casualties.

Friday and Saturday were the toughest nights in Kentucky’s history, and some areas have been hit so hard. Counties with likely damage and debris include Fulton, Hickman, Graves, Marshall, Lyon, Caldwell, Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Breckenridge, Bullit, Spencer, Shelby, Christian, Logan, Warren, Edmondson, Taylor and Marion. And before daybreak of Saturday, the death toll from the event will exceed 50 Kentuckians, probably end up closer to 70 to 100 lost lives.

As of 4:45 A.M. of Saturday, 56,854 Kentuckians are without power. Before midnight , Kentucky Governor has declared a state of emergency. He has activated the National Guard and we deployed 181 guardsmen, including search and extraction and debris clearance folks.

In Tennessee, the severe weather killed at least three people, Dean Flener, spokesman for the state's Emergency Management Agency has reported. At least one person was killed and five were injured when a tornado shredded the roof of a nursing home in Monette in northern Arkansas.

In Illinois, authorities said many people were trapped after a roof partially collapsed at an Amazon.com Inc warehouse near St. Louis late on Friday , after tornadoes and strong storms blew through the area.

Beshear was quoted as saying the damage would be "some of the worst ... we've seen in a long time".

The storms caused a CSX company freight train to derail in western Kentucky, although it said no injuries were reported.
